Sixth form student's composition a winner!
Congratulations to Year 13 student Chris, who has won a national music prize for his entry into the ORA Singers Composer Competition 2022.
ORA Singers is an award-winning vocal ensemble, whose focus is predominantly on commissioning and supporting composers. In 2019, they developed and launched a young composers’ scheme, the ORA Singers Composer Competition, in which ten finalists from state schools across the UK are selected to receive specialist mentoring from a celebrated professional composer.
Chris applied for the competition by submitting the score to a piano quartet that he'd recently written and became one of 40 young composers from UK state schools who received 8 hours of compositional masterclasses, introducing them to many aspects of choral history and compositional technique.
Following this, Chris was selected as one of ten finalists meaning that he will now receive ten hours of mentoring by industry-leading composers through the composition of a new acapella choral work, followed by a workshop in June. The finalists' works will then be performed in a concert in London in July.
Through the workshops, Chris will gain experience in a new compositional style and will receive a recording of his work at the end.
Well done Chris on this amazing achievement!
